Acceptable Worship - Week 12
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE
For the week of November 22nd
Breaking the Ice/Think Time
What does it mean to worship someone or something?
Quick Review… Looking back at your notes from this Sunday’s sermon, what caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?
Understanding the Truth (Aim for 30 minutes)
1. Read Hebrews 12:28-13:1. Hebrews 12:28 tells us to offer “acceptable worship” to God and 13:1 asks us to “let brotherly love continue”. How do these connect? Read and see the connection to Jesus words in Matthew 28:37-40.
2. Summarize the four admonitions given in Hebrews 13:2-13:5. After summarizing, reflect on how each of these relate to verse 13:1?
13:2
13:3
13:4
13:5
3. In verse 13:6, the author quotes Psalm 118:6 & 27:1. What do these verses point to as the fears behind the love of money?
4. Read Hebrews 13:7 & 1 Corinthians 4:17. What are these verses saying? What can we learn about being followers of Christ who build up other followers of Christ (disciplemaking) from these verses?
5. Read Hebrews 13:8. What a beautiful truth about god! But why does the author give us this much quoted truth about God here? Why is it important to know that God never changes and is faithful when we look back at our leaders (verse 7) and all the heroes of the faith from Hebrews 11?
6. What is the author’s point in verses 13:9-10? Read Deut. 18:1 to better understand.
7. Read and summarize what Hebrews 13:11-16 are saying:
8. What can we learn from verses 17 and 18 about what it means to lead and to follow as God desires?
Living the Truth
1. In verse 22 the author tells us he has written to us and his original readers “briefly”. Think back to all that has been said about the supremacy of Christ in the book of Hebrews! Can you imagine what else he would have included? He said so much and yet there is so much more to say about Christ. How can you better worship Christ with reverence and awe after all you’ve learned from your study in Hebrews?
2. Read the benediction in Hebrews 13:20-21 together as group and pray these verses together as we conclude this season of gathering weekly to study Hebrews & look forward all God has in store for us in the future.
Prayer Requests (Aim for minimum of 10 minutes)
