The Bronze Serpent: Numbers 21:1-9


Exodus 14:11-12

They said to Moses, “Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is not this what we said to you in Egypt: ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

Numbers 21:4

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way.

The Sin (v.5)

  1. The Penalty (v.6)

  2. The Response (v.7)

  3. The Remedy (v.8-9)

Numbers 21:5

And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.”

The SIN was a DISSATISFACTION of God’s PROVISION and His PROMISES

Numbers 21:6

Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.

The VENOM of SIN Entered Through ONE Man and SPREAD to MANKIND

Romans 5:12

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men[a] because all sinned—

Romans 3:23

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Numbers 21:7

And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

Romans 8:34

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.[a]

1 Timothy 2:5

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[a]Christ Jesus,

Numbers 21:8-9

And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze[a]serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

God PROVIDED- The ANTIDOTE- SALVATION

John 3:12-13

If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.[a]

John 3:14-15

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.[a]

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world,[a] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Numbers 21:8-9

SIN is My CURSE- CHRIST is My CURE
