Jesus Prays in Gethsemane | Mark 14:32-42

Mark 14:32-42

32 And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”[a] 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 37 And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? 38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.41 And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

  1. Prayer in temptation

  2. Prayer in suffering

  3. Prayer in acceptance

1. Prayer in temptation - in our trials are we more like Jesus or the disciples? Jesus in His humanity expresses a desire that the cup be passed from Him and goes straight to the Father. The apostles ignore Jesus’ warning and fall asleep.

Jesus warns the apostles

Matthew 16:21 - Jesus begins to tell the apostles that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer and die and be raised from the dead…and Peter objects.

John 13:21-30 - Jesus announces during the last supper that one of them will betray Him and he dips the bread and gives it to Judas.

Mark 14:27-31 - Right before Gethsemane Jesus warns that they will all fall away but they deny it.

2. Prayer in suffering - Jesus is able to be distressed without falling into temptation. He is able to trust in the midst of His distress but does not fall into distrusting despair.

3. Prayer in acceptance - “yet not what I will but what you will” Jesus makes His request and if the answer is no, He accepts the Father’s will.

Jesus’ relationship with the Father

Matthew 3:17 - “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 17:5 - “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.”

John 6:38 - For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of Him who sent me.

John 14: 19-11 - “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. Believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me.
