Olivet Discourse

  • Jesus is giving a prophecy of things to come

  • Division among current believers about what this text means when these events will or have occurred

What Jesus Mentions:

  • Imminent Destruction

  • Rise of False Teachers

  • Crazy Current/Future Events

  • Persecution of the Apostles and the Church

Imminent Destruction

Mark 13:1–13

13 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

Matthew 24:3 offers clarity on the questions the Apostles ask Jesus

As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Rise of False Teachers

Mark 13:5-6

And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray.

Rise of False Teachers

Revelation 1:7

Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail[a] on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Rise of False Teachers

When Jesus comes back, you are going to know

Crazy Current/Future Events

Mark 13:7

And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet.

Crazy Current/Future Events

Mark 13:8

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

Persecution of the Apostles and the Church

Mark 13:9

“But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them.

In Persecution, Jesus Gives His Apostles:

• Aim

• Assurance

Aim

Mark 13:10

10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Persecution of the Apostles and the Church

Mark 13:11-13a

11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name's sake.

Acts 4:8–12

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders,if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus[a] is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.[b] 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men[c] by which we must be saved.”

Assurance

Mark 13:13b

13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

We as believers are called to:

Endure in truth as we share the Gospel

Endure in a world that hates us as we share the Gospel

Endure and share the Gospel until Jesus returns

Hebrews 10:32–39

32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For,

“Yet a little while,
    and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
    and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”

39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
